Something Good on the Wii

On a site dominated by XBox 360 and PS3 gamers, I am likely to get a thumping for running this as a front page story. But we frequently get requests to cover at least a little Wii news in the various outlets.

Metroid: Other M is a game that tells the story of a past chapter in the life of bounty hunter Samus Aran. Featuring the ability to shift from 2D to 3D perspectives on the fly, the title takes place on a space station. The WiiMote is held sideways for most of the control scheme-time the player spends. Metacritic shows this game as running an 80 amalgamated score right now. Good reviews are in from Wired, Joystiq, IGN, GameSpot, and GamePro. Outlets that do not think so highly of the title include GamesRadar, 1UP, GameInformer, and GameSpy. Peep the feed and follow the links to these review outlets and others for the scoop on whether or not this is the game for you.

Borderlands mapping out Game of the Year Edition Oct. 12

Gearbox Software's stylized postapocalyptic shooter compiling all four add-on packs later this year for $60 on 360, PS3 and $50 on PC.

Gearbox Software earned critical acclaim and commercial success for the stylized shooter Borderlands upon its launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC last October. To capitalize on that success, Gearbox has supported the game all year long with substantive downloadable add-ons, including The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, and the recently announced Claptrap's New Robot Revolution.

With the game's one-year anniversary rapidly approaching, 2K Games and Gearbox announced today that they would be collecting all four add-ons into a single Game of the Year edition. Set for release on October 12, the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition includes all four aforementioned packs for $59.99 on the Xbox 360 and PS3 and $49.99 on the PC, in addition to the original campaign. A "comprehensive" Borderlands map will also be included with the package.

Notably, the expansion packs are not included on the game's disc. Instead, the add-on content can be redeemed by way of download tokens included with the package.

The Borderlands GOTY Edition will be preceded by the game's fourth add-on, Claptrap's New Robot Revolution. Due for release in September, the content thrusts players into a civil war between the Hyperion Corporation and the Claptraps, led by the elusive Ninja Assassin. The Robot Revolution downloadable content adds new missions and enemies--including Claptrap-ified monsters--to shoot and loot, as well as new boss battles.

As with Borderlands' other add-ons, Claptrap's New Robot Revolution can be purchased individually through each system's respective online service for $10 (800 Microsoft points).

New 360 controller to feature transforming D pad

image_id: 1240
Microsoft addresses oft-made complaint with a new wireless pad due out November 9 with play-and-charge kit for $65.

In the past five years, Microsoft has encountered a number of complaints regarding its Xbox 360 hardware. The most vociferous of those were likely related to critical hardware failures, but not far behind were gripes about the standard Xbox 360 controller's D pad, which players felt yielded insufficiently precise inputs for some games like Lumines Live or Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting.

Cold War Kids Get Rewarded

If you ever imagined launching your very own Wargame from your modestly powered Commodore 64, then you might be interested in the re-boot of this piece of nostalgia. While not directly gaming news, I figure so many of us used C64's, or hung out at a friend's house who did, that it was worth posting. Does not look like you'll be doing any serious gaming on these since it does not appear that they have discrete GPUs. But of course, there's nothing to stop you from grabbing a stable C64 emulator and loading ROMs. Especially if you get your hands on the retro-version that actually looks like the original C64. The boards in these might be laptop chipsets, so as more info comes out, we might see discrete GPUs starting to creep in.

That all being said, I would not jump in as an early adopter on this one. Might be good to give it some time and see if anyone gets burned on this purchase. Now if someone will just do the same with a TI-39 re-boot, we would be set.

Target Wants Your Used Games?

image_id: 1223 Target today announced it will soon allow customers to trade in a number of electronic devices, including new or used iPhones, iPods, cell phones and videogames, to receive in-store credit that can be used towards other purchases.

Target joins retailers GameStop, Best Buy, and Walmart as a destination to sell back used videogames. GameStop said on its latest earnings call that while the company is taking this new competition seriously, it has yet to see an impact on sales.
